The woman stated that at the time no one was at home but the television and radio were left on but there was no cooking.

Hinds said her son, Mikel Hinds, was not at home but neighbours and public-spirited citizens, who observed the fire, acted quickly and managed to take out some of the furniture and other household appliances from the lower flat of the house.

The mother of one added that the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) was summoned to the scene and contained the conflagration to the lower flat of the house. However, the flooring of the upper flat was badly damaged and most of the household articles are water-soaked.

Hinds told this publication the fire started in the lower flat of the building and quickly consumed most of the furniture and household appliances in the kitchen and living room.

She disclosed that yesterday was 15 years and one month to the day that her husband passed away and although nothing much was saved she was grateful for life and at least the top flat of her house.

She was in loud praise of her neighbours and others who were at the scene and assisted her and her son yesterday, and some who stayed to offer their support. (Michel Outridge)
