JAMAL Pilgrim, 20, of King Street, Cumberland, East Canje Berbice, who is alleged to have touched his neighbour inappropriately, was granted $50,000 bail on a charge of sexual assault. He appeared Wednesday before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs Marcus at the Reliance Court where he pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleged that he touched the thirteen-year-old in a sexual way without her consent.
Prior to ordering his pre-trial liberty, the magistrate stipulated that the defendant must not go within twenty feet of the virtual complainant’s home or place of education.
Police Sergeant Phillip Sherriff, prosecuting, said that on February 10, the defendant went to the home of the alleged victim in order to answer a telephone call.
The defendant then allegedly went into the bedroom, where he was conversing on the landline phone. During that period, the complainant went into the room, and was seated on the bed, when the defendant is alleged to have seductively rubbed his hands on her thighs.
The schoolgirl became annoyed and reported the incident to her parent, who took her to the Reliance Police Station, where an official complaint was lodged and the charge instituted.
The matter is fixed for trial on April 1.
