MORE than 150 physically challenged persons were hosted at a lunch by the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG) last Sunday.The luncheon was held at the Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) Complex, Woolford Avenue, Thomas Lands and in attendance were Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Jennifer Webster and Minister of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsarran.
President of the CIOG Hajji Fazeel Ferouz said the idea of the luncheon was initiated by an official of the Guyana Able Sport Cycle Wheel-Chair and Educational Organisation and was welcomed by the religious organisation.
Ferouz explained that it was during the festive season in 2014 it was observed that the differently-abled had not been feted and as such, they wanted to do something for them.
Those in attendance had an opportunity to air their general grievances which were well received by the Government officials present and they acknowledged the need for redress.
Meanwhile, Ms. Webster reiterated Government’s willingness to support the disabled persons in society. She said at present, there are 5,279 permanently disabled persons on the public benefits register of the Labour Ministry.
While there are some 4,000 persons who are not on the list, the Government is considering an expansion of the register, she added.
Also making remarks was Minister of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsarran.
