‘Slim’ murder trial… Det. Supt tells about seeing accused running away

DETECTIVE Supt. Terrace Paul was testifying in the Troy Green called ‘Slim’ murder trial Monday when he told the judge and jury about the accused saying, “Oh Police” and began running away from them.

According to the Supt., the area was being cordoned off by the Police when the accused dashed off after making the remarks.
Witness added, “ we pursued him and captured him in the vicinity of the M and M Snackette. When I arrested him, I immediately told him that it is alleged that on the 29th may, 2010 about 02:00 hours at Hague Jib, West Coast, Demerara, he in company with another, murdered Bibi Rafeena Saymar.
“I cautioned him, he remained silent. I placed him in the pick up and took him to the Leonora Police Station where he was placed in custody.
“Further investigations were carried out and the accused was later charged with the offence of murder.”
Earlier the officer who was stationed at Leonora Police Station told Justice Navindra Singh and the jury at the Demerara Assizes that relative to a report of an alleged murder of Bibi Rafeena Saymar which occurred on 29th May 2010 at Hague Jib, West Coast Demerara, he was conducting investigations into the matter.
According to the witness, at about 04:00 hours that said day he visited Leonora Police Station where he met one Dennis Persaud in custody. He spoke with him in relation to the matter and as a result of what Persaud told him, he in company with other ranks left for the scene of the alleged murder.
Upon arrival at Lot 21 Hague Jib, West Coast. Demerara, witness saw a 2-storey wooden and concrete building situated in a fenced yard. The building was facing north and was occupied by two families.. The Madrimootoo family was occupying the lower flat while the deceased and Dennis Persaud were occupying the upper flat.
Witness said that upon entering the upper flat from the northern stairway he saw what appeared to be fresh blood on the floor of the hall leading to the second bedroom. Upon entering the second bedroom he saw a bed on which he saw what appeared to be fresh blood.
The said bed room was identified to him as the bedroom the deceased and Dennis Persaud were occupying..
The other room was ransacked as there were several pieces of clothing scattered on the floor and on the bed. Witness’s attention was also drawn to the presence of an insecured glass window.
Witness returned to Leonora Police Station with Dennis Persaud.
While at the station he again spoke with Dennis Persaud and as a result of information received, he in company with Dennis Persaud and other ranks left for the Eastern half of the Demerara Harbour Bridge.
Dennis was driving his motor-pick-up and he was in company with Ex Detective Constable 2075 williams while witness was in another vehicle in company with other ranks behind Dennis’ vehicle.
Upon arrival on the eastern half of Demerarea Bridge Dennis parked his vehicle on the southern corner as planned.. Shortly after he parked, he saw the accused, Troy Green ( who was pointed out). That witness said was the very first time he saw him disembark a motor vehicle which was parked further south of Dennis’ vehicle and run towards Dennis who was sitting in the Driver’s seat..
The Supt. said that by then, they had already cordoned off the area when he heard the accused say “Oh Police” and began running in an easterly direction.
It was at this stage that the witness said the police party chased and caught the accused Troy Green. The allegation of murder together with the usual caution was put to the accused who remained silent.
Justice Singh began conducting a voir dire ( a trial within a trial) on Monday afternoon to determine the admissibility of an alleged caution statement the accused is said to have made to the police.
Attorney-at-Law, Mr. Peter Hugh is appearing for the accused, while Miss Mercedes Thompson is conducting the case for the prosecution.
The hearing is continuing.
