JUNIOR welterweight boxer Dillon Carew was cruising on undefeated street when he ran into Nigerian Moses James on January 11, 1995.Unbeaten in eight fights, Carew was forced to accept his first loss when James was adjudged the winner of the eight-round contest held in Quebec, Canada.
It was the first time that Carew, who represented Guyana at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, fought outside of Guyana since turning pro. Carew was crowned national lightweight champion two fights earlier when he defeated Glen Forde.
He became the national junior welterweight champion on February 26, 1995 by winning a 12-round decision over Barrington Cambridge. Carew fought the likes of Meldrick Taylor, Ricky Hatton and Diosbelys Hurtado in a career that spanned 15 years.
He ended with 20 victories, 17 defeats and three draws.
