SOMETIME last year, an unknown character needlessly stole from the Young Warriors Cricket Club (YWCC), their covers that is used to cover the pitch in the night and when the rain falls during matches being hosted at the New Amsterdam, Canje based venue. However, at a simple ceremony held recently, overseas based friends of the YWCC handed over US$450.00 to assist with the purchase of the pitch covers, on behalf of Mel Carpen, Dave Sookrah,, Chin Singh, Outram and Ramoo Singh who handed over the funds.
Prior to doing the handing over, Ramoo Singh said that they read in the media that the club covers were stolen and they were very disappointed, and were following the progress of the club over the years and are happy to know that it has produced so many cricketers at all levels in Guyana.
Some players such as pugnacious opener Shimron Hetmyer went on to play for the West Indies Under-19 team and also made his national debut with Guyana’s senior team.

He said that as Berbicians and Guyanese, the group of friends find it difficult to understand why people are so heartless, adding that sports, cricket in particular, has helped to reduce crime and has made a financial difference in the lives of many, even their families, relatives, close friends and clubs have benefitted from sports.

In response, the Club’s Secretary/Treasurer Anil Beharry who was recently elected to the presidency of the Berbice Cricket Board thanked the group of friends for their kind gesture and challenged Berbicians, residents of Canje in particular to follow suit.
Beharry said he was hurt and disappointed at the actions from a few hooligans in the area but that will not deter the club from moving forward, reminding them that the cricket venue is open to all and encouraged parents to send their children, male and female to join the club at no cost.
The club is open to children of all ages and has two qualified coaches in Hubern Evans and Kwesi Maltay and Beharry took the time to thank Ramoo Singh and friends and said as early as the club raise the balance of the funds, the covers will be replaced.

Beharry hinted that the club’s annual fundraiser, the Mash Cup 2015, will be launched soon, and is asking all the second division clubs in Number 19/Canje area to make contact with the executive members of YWCC as soon as possible.
