Technician on $250,000 bail for accidental death of Mocha woman

AIR conditioning (AC) technician Delroy Welford of Lot 77 Quamina Street, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara appeared yesterday before Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to answer a causing death charge, and was placed on $250,000 bail.

Welford pleaded not guilty to the charge, particulars of which detailed that on Friday, November 7, at Mocha Main Access Road, East Bank Demerara, he drove motorcar PPP 9521 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of forty-five-year-old, Carol Overton of Mocha.

Police Prosecutor, Bharat Mangru did not oppose bail, but asked that conditions be applied if surety is granted.

The Prosecution is alleging that on the day in question, the defendant was driving at a fast rate of speed heading north when the deceased was also heading in the northern direction. The court heard that Welford alleged he had swerved from a motorcar coming in the opposite direction when his vehicle came into contact with the deceased.

Attorney-at-law, Mr. Roger Yearwood, representing the defendant, requested reasonable bail for his client, stating that his client is not a flight risk, and had cooperated with the police during the investigation.

The attorney told the court that after the accident had occurred; his client rendered assistance and took the injured woman to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Apart from securing bail, Welford was ordered to report to the police every fortnight until completion of the matter; and statements were ordered to be filed on November 28.
