Businessman on $600,000 bail on unlawful gun and ammunition charges

TWENTY-SIX-YEAR-OLD businessman, Robert Hussain of Lot 478 Crane Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara appeared yesterday before Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on charges of unlawful possession of gun and ammunition.

He pleaded not guilty to both charges, one of which detailed that on Friday, November 7, at Crane WCD, he had in his possession one .32 revolver without being the holder of a firearm licence.

Particulars of the other charge detailed that on the same day, at Crane WCD, Hussain had in his possession seven live rounds of matching ammunition when he was not a licensed firearm holder.

Police prosecutor, Bharat Mangru told the court that, on the day in question, police pulled over minibus GKK 1892 and carried out a search. At the time, the defendant was the only occupant of the bus, and a search of his person unearthed the alleged gun and ammunition in his pants waist. He was told of the offence and arrested and charged.

The defendant’s attorney, Mr. Peter Hugh, requested that his client be admitted to bail, but
the prosecutor opposed bail. His objection was overruled by the Chief Magistrate, and Hussain was granted $300,000 bail on each charge.

These matters stand adjourned until November 13.
