Keen rivalry anticipated for 10th Laparkan cycle programme on Saturday

KEEN rivalry is anticipated on Saturday when national cycle coach Hassan Mohamed conducts the 10th Annual Laparkan 11-race cycle programme around the inner circuit of the National Park.

The day’s activity commences at 09:00hrs with a three-lap race for BMX boys nine to twelve years old and concludes with a 35-lap event for schoolboys and invitational riders which have already started to create much expectancy, since the country’s top riders will be part of the event. It will be used as a warm-up for the Annual Ride for Life Five-Stage road race that is scheduled for October 16 to 19.
Among the cyclists expected to face the starter for the 35-lap feature event are Raynauth Jeffrey, Michael Anthony, Alanzo Greaves, defending champion Robin Persaud, Hamza Eastman, Marlon `Fishy Williams, Enzo Matthews, Warren McKay and United States-based Guyanese Geron W#illiams.
This event promises much excitement as Jeffrey, who has won two consecutive races over the weekend, would be seeking to improve his ranking with a third consecutive victory from as many starts, while local cycling enthusiasts will want to witness how well Geron Williams has improved since winning the National Road Race championship a few months ago.
However, there are `dark horses’ that Jeffrey and Williams will have to be wary of, such as Michael Anthony, Persaud, Eastman and Matthews.
Persaud won the event last year with a time of one hour 18 minutes 16.40 seconds and, based on his performance at last Sunday’s Alanzo Birthday Classic 30-lap event around the very circuit where he placed sixth after copping eight of the 30 prime prizes, could very well be a threat to the younger cyclists.
Jeffrey won that very event ahead of Alanzo Greaves, Marlon Williams, Eastman and Christopher Holder in that order.
With the return of Geron Williams, Saturday’s feature event promises much excitement that should not be missed.
Sherwin Sampson who has been dominating the BMX boys nine to twelve and twelve to 14 years old races over the past few months is should continue his dominance of the two events but will be challenged by Jerimiah Harrison, Alexander Leung and Taran Garbarran.
There will also be a three-lap race for BMX boys open as well as a three-lap race for BMX boys and girls 12-14 years of age.
Five-lap races are on the card for veterans under and over 50 years of age as well as one for veteran over 60 years of age and another for mountain bikers.
Juvenile cyclists will contest a 10-lap affair which was won by Eastman last year in a time of 24 minutes 08.08 seconds.
Linden Blackman won the veterans Under-50 event last year but will be contesting the Over-50 this time around.
Richard Charles is the defending mountain bike champion while Romelo Crawford is the defending BMX boys 12-14 years three-lap champion.
