THE Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) recently donated a $50,000 book voucher that is valid at Austin’s Book Store to Jeremiah Bentham of Canal No. 1/La Parfait Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, who attained a place at Queen’s College through his success at the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) exams. The boy’s success story despite many challenges has touched the hearts of many and so he has received awards for his effort from a few organisations, including the Mark Benschop Foundation.
Jeremiah Bentham, a 12-year-old of La Parfait Harmonie was overwhelmed when he got the news of his outstanding performance. He placed sixth at the NGSA, having acquired 524 marks.
The pupil of Winfer Gardens said that he “studied all night, gave up television…and a lot of things,” which he believed propelled him in the right direction.
“It’s like I can run, skip, jump all at the same time, but I’m generally grateful to God, my mother and my teachers for my success,” he noted.
Mark Benschop Foundation presented Jeremiah, the top student at Winfer Gardens Primary, who is also in the top 10 of the country, with a quantity of reading books.
Jeremiah’s story is quite touching…his mother is a cook and sometimes she walks and sells around Georgetown.
He wants to become an engineer and in the new school term he will attend Queen’s College.
