GUYANA will be hosting the 21st Biennial Meeting and Conference of the Caribbean Association of Home Economists (CAHE), beginning on March 28 and extending into April 2015.

CAHE, in collaboration with the Guyana Association of Home Economists (GAHE), would be holding the conference under the theme “Community Partnership for economic and social empowerment of families through Home Economics.”

At a press briefing held at the Carnegie School of Home Economics yesterday, members of CAHE and GAHE provided insights on the said conference, in order to sensitise the public and stakeholders on the impending conference and to garner both public and private sector funding for the initiative. It is believed that this conference would aid in enhancing Guyana’s tourism sector.

The Ministry of Education (MoE) is also collaborating in hosting this conference. Among matters to be discussed would be amending the association’s constitution to allow for expanding its membership; plans made for celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the International Year of the Family (IYF), which are presently being developed by the International Federation for Home Economics (IFHE); besides other topical issues as well as other matters which affect home economists throughout the Region.

Additionally, CAHE would be examining the issue of enhancing professional development of members and associates, while providing opportunities for social and professional networking and social and economic growth of territories in which its members are located.

Aside from hosting the conference in Guyana, there will be efforts made to attract public awareness on the theoretical and practical aspects of Home Economics. CAHE realises that homemaking skills are an integral part of family life, and will consequently be vital in improving the quality of life to which families are exposed. The body also recognises the necessity of exposing students to critical thinking when participating in Home Economics classes.

CAHE meet at various venues throughout the Caribbean, and this will mark the body’s third meeting in Guyana, the first being in 1983 under the presidency of Guyanese Ms. Victorine Britton, and the second being in 1997.

This conference is expected to attract more than 300 home economists, associates, and family members from the Region and around the world.

CAHE is a non-governmental organisation of more than 500 members from the Anglophone Caribbean, Guyana and Belize, and to a lesser extent North America, whilst GAHE is the local body responsible for planning, organising and executing this conference with stakeholder support.
