Escapee from Providence Station lock-up gets 12 months

A 29-year-old man of Lot 60 Hadfield Street, Georgetown, who was charged with escaping from the Providence Police Station lock-up last Sunday night was sentenced to a 12-month jail term.

Appearing before Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, on Tuesday, Lennox Cort pleaded guilty to the offence that said on Sunday, May 25 at Providence Police Station, East Bank Demerara, while being in custody over an alleged assault, he escaped from the said custody.
Police Corporal, Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, said on the day in question the defendant was assaulting his girlfriend when his cousin, Devon Pile, who lives upstairs of the house, intervened in the matter.
Cort then armed himself with a piece of wood and lashed the virtual complainant to his head. The court was told by the prosecutor that Pile collapsed and fell to the ground. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and the matter was reported to the police.
