Prisoner granted $200,000 bail on drug charge

CONVICTED prisoner, Sunil Tahal, of Pope Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice, was granted $200,000 bail yesterday, on a charge of trafficking 226 grammes of cannabis sativa (marijuana). The grant was because Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus had been informed that Tahal’s trial will not start
within a reasonable time.
Tahal had been serving a sentence on June 27, 2013, when he was seen with a bulky bag as he crawled under the fence in the vicinity of the prison’s kitchen, prior to entering a pen which housed domesticated birds.
Whilst there, he opened the bag and pulled out a parcel in which were leaves, seeds and stems, suspected to be portions of the hemp plant.
He was challenged by a prison official, who, subsequently, informed the Police and they instituted the charge.
In addition to the bail, Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs- Marcus stipulated that the defendant report each Friday at 08:00hrs, until the determination of the case trial for which starts on July 31.
