Mother of four gets $2M to build home

SCOTIABANK and Habitat for Humanity Guyana second phase ‘Build a Home’ partnership beneficiary, Ms. Althea Boucher received $2M on Wednesday to build at La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara.

It happened at the launch of that part of the project at the Bank’s Robb Street, Georgetown branch, made possible through funding from Scotiabank Headquarters in Canada.
Boucher lived with her family, including four children, in a section of a factory at Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, in poor conditions for more than eight years, experiencing theft on various occasions.
She has since moved from there because of its recent demolition and now resides in a small apartment.
Financing for the building of the Bouchers’ house is also being provided by the First Assembly of God Church, while ScotiaBank staff will be volunteering their services.
Scotiabank supports communities, both in Canada and elsewhere, through its global philanthropic programme, ‘Bright Future’.
Recognised as a leader internationally and among Canadian corporations for its charitable donations and acts of philanthropy, Scotiabank has provided, on average, approximately CDN$47M annually to community causes around the world over each of the last five years.

Service organisation
Habitat for Humanity Guyana is a service organisation with a mission to alleviate poverty through increased accessibility to decent housing, especially for marginalised groups and programmes aimed at enhancing community development.
It is committed to that cause by providing a diversified range of services to support adequate housing for the indigent and other vulnerable persons, inclusive of those with disabilities and informal dwellers.
Support for its programmes allows Scotiabank to give back to society as part of its corporate social responsibility.
