FINANCE Minister Dr Ashni Singh has extended his gratitude to the elderly for their dedicated service to their communities and families over the years.
“Each of us have a responsibility to make our communities, or society and country a better place, even as we call on our government to do more,” Minister Singh told those who gathered for a special threat at the Dharam Shala in Albouystown on Christmas Day.
During his remarks, the Finance Minister congratulated the operators of Dharam Shala for their continued patronage to the less fortunate despite the passing of its patron, Mr. Harry Ramsaroop, in October. The minister alluded to the selfless work of the Ramsaroop family which has been providing social services for over 92 years.
“I am hard-pressed to find a family which has taken the initiative to make the community a better place than the Ramsarroop family,” he posited.
Minister Singh also noted that the work of the Ramsaroop family serves as a model for other families and individuals to emulate as a standard for charity. The minister pledged continued support to the organisation in recognition of its efforts to support social, spiritual and educational initiatives with the community.
The event involved prayer, caroling and a reflection on the symbolism of Christmas.
The Dharam Shala was established to provide social services for the poor and needy in 1921 by Pandit Ramsaroop Maraj. The home has been managed through three generations of the Ramsaroop family since its founding.
