Married mother of two freed of narcotic charge

A TWENTY-SEVEN-YEAR-OLD married mother of two was freed from the country’s lone female penitentiary on Monday, when Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus upheld a no-case submission.
The woman, Nalini Baldeo called Julia had been charged with being in possession of 63 grammes of cannabis sativa (marijuana) for the purpose of trafficking. She previously pleaded not guilty to the charge and was denied bail and remanded to the New Amsterdam Prison in Berbice.
Police Sergeant, Phillip Sherriff, prosecuting, said, following a report of sexual assault, the ranks went to the defendant’s residence at Number Two Village, East Canje, also in Berbice, where they intended to question her husband.
But they saw Baldeo attempting to dispose of a black plastic bag which, when opened, contained what was suspected to be leaves, seeds and stems of the cannabis plant.
In a failed bail application, attorney-at-law, Ms. Charlyn Artiga informed the court that the defendant was unemployed and depended solely on her husband’s income.
Additionally, the home is frequently visited by associates of her husband, who had not been seen since the bust, the lawyer said.
However, the prosecutor countered that the defendant was home alone when the narcotic was found.
