-holds Master of Laws degree and practises in Grenada
THANDIWE Lyle, the daughter of Joylyn Lyle and the late Professor Calvin A. Eversley on Wednesday was admitted to the bar.Her petition was presented by former Chancellor and Attorney General, Professor Keith Massiah S.C before acting Chief Justice Ian Chang.
In presenting the petition, Senior Counsel Masssiah spoke of Thandiwe’s display of considerable academic fortitude from an early age and listed some of her achievements to date. He said that Thandiwe’s admission to the bar in Guyana was the fulfilment of the dream of her father, Professor Calvin Eversley, who had commenced the bar admission process but passed away before it could become a reality.
The Chief Justice, in accepting the petition, lamented the absence of Thandiwe’s father, describing him as a brilliant legal mind with a great knowledge of the law. He noted that coming from such parentage, she could not afford to be ordinary and advised her that having knowledge of the law was not enough; she must now apply that knowledge. He emphasized the importance of enduring until the end and facing every challenge that would come her way with confidence.
In her acceptance speech, the young attorney described her admission as the product of God’s tender mercies and faithfulness, the efforts of her parents, particularly her mother, and the loving community of family and friends who helped to raise her and thanked them for the role that they played.
She expressed her remorse at the absence of her father but was grateful that his dream was realised.
Thandiwe was born in Guyana but grew up in Grenada where she received most of her formal education. From an early age she excelled at academics and was a top performer at the CXC, CSEC, and GCE ‘A’ level examinations.
Thandiwe commenced reading for the Bachelor of Laws degree at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill campus in 2006, after being awarded the prestigious UWI Open Scholarship. At UWI, she received the LLB Part 1 Prize and the Sir Fred Phillips Award in Law and Legal Systems. Thandiwe graduated from UWI with Upper Second Class Honours in 2009.
Thandiwe entered the Hugh Wooding Law School in 2009 and was awarded the Legal Education Certificate on September 2, 2011. She graduated on the Principal’s Honour Roll and received the Grenada Bar Association prize.
In 2011, Thandiwe received a Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship to pursue a Master of Laws degree in International Business and Economic Law at Georgetown University, Washington DC. She graduated with distinction and on the Dean’s list in 2012. She currently practises in Grenada where she was called to the bar on October 2011.
