THE health and wellness fair, being hosted by the University of Guyana Students Society (UGSS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, is continuing through tomorrow in the UG Student Building at the Turkeyen Campus.
Students, lecturers as well as members of the general public are being offered free services which include eye care, general out-patient clinic, voluntary counseling and testing, blood pressure tests, random blood sugar, cholesterol and body mass index testing and counseling.Health lectures are also being delivered in the Education Lecture Theatre (ELT) from 16:30 hrs to 17:30hrs daily, on topics such as adolescent health, family health, non-communicable diseases and tuberculosis.
UG SS President Richard Rambarran told the Guyana Chronicle on Tuesday they realise an exercise of that nature was never conducted at UG and, as such, they decided to write the Health Ministry requesting the collaboration.
According to him, this activity is a much needed one which should be undertaken, because UG is a hub for stress and a student society is supposed to be concerned about the welfare of the students.
Rambarran pointed out that health is a major part of any organisation and the well-being of persons is always important.
Good one
First year business management student, Florence Foo remarked that the activity is a good one, since she, personally, does not have the time to visit a doctor so it is more convenient to access these services right on campus.
While waiting to get her eyes tested, she said she learnt about the opportunity when she was in a class and overheard her colleagues talking about it.
Second year civil engineering student, Faruq Ally agreed it is a good initiative and thinks it should be undertaken more regularly, as students are, often, too busy to go elsewhere for regular medical check-ups.
It is more convenient for students to visit the health and wellness fair and get their tests done instead of having to miss a class to go elsewhere.
