A FORTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD labourer (no address given) was sentenced to two months imprisonment yesterday, for stealing a dress.
Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, inflicted the custodial penalty on Troy Lyght after he admitted that, on Monday, November 18, in America Street, Georgetown, he stole the $2,000 frock, property of Rabindranauth Rampersaud. Police Corporal Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, said the virtual complainant is the owner of R&R imports, on America Street and, usually, displays clothes on mannequins.
The prosecutor said that day around 16:00 hrs, the thief took the displayed merchandise off a mannequin and walked away with it.
But the defendant claimed it fell from where it was hung and he picked it up and put it in his dust box.
The chief magistrate said she took into consideration, as mitigating factors, the defendant’s plea which did not waste the Court’s time and his age.
