UG Inter-Faculty Athletics championships start with field events

THE School of Agriculture stood in the lead after the completion of the first five events while defending champions, Faculty of Social Sciences, got off to a slow start, as competition in the University of Guyana Inter-Faculty Athletics Championships commenced with field events yesterday afternoon at the UG campus ground.

With only 18 points at the completion of five of the six events yesterday, Faculty of Social Sciences ended in the penultimate position just ahead of School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, who had only five points. School of Agriculture stood at the helm after ending with 37 points.
Last year second-place finisher, Faculty of Natural Sciences (FNS), followed behind the School of Agriculture after making it to 30 points.
FNS shared the position with Faculty of Health Sciences who also had 30 points. The School of Education and Humanities had 25 points, Berbice Campus 22, and Faculty of Technology 21.
Yesterday’s start saw the completion of the male and female shot put, discus, and javelin events, and it was participation over position that led School of Agriculture to the fore. With participation in almost all the events, School of Agriculture won despite achieving nothing higher than a second-place position.
FNS took the top two positions in the women’s discus throw, won by Brianna Gordon’s 18.86m throw. Kezia Bess followed with a 17.74m throw, and third went to the 15.10m throw from Agriculture’s Shanica Bellamy.
Gordon was out again in the women’s javelin where she brought second behind Humanities’ Oneka McKenzie. Gordon’s 16.54m throw surpassed the 16.48m throw by Agriculture’s Donnacia Thornhill, but it was no match for the 23.52m throw that McKenzie managed.
McKenzie was also too good for her opponents in the women’s shot put, where her best throw was 7.79m. Thornhill followed with a 7.50m throw, Gordon finished third this time with a best throw of 7.03m.
On the male side Social Sciences finally collected some points, and even a win, after Godfrey LaRose threw the javelin 42.05m to outmaster the 36.56m reached by Health Sciences’ Berkley Adams. Agriculture took another third place compliments of Carter whose best throw landed at 35.90m.
LaRose finished second in the shot put, his 10.53 throw being not enough to overcome the 11.34m thrown by Technology’s Kleon Spellen.
Competition in the event is scheduled to continue today with the long jump and track events beginning at 09:00hrs at the Guyana Defence Force ground.
