ALBERT De Freitas (no address given) was remanded to prison Tuesday , when he appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman on a simple larceny charge.
After the Administration of Justice Act (AJA) was applied, the defendant, 49, pleaded not guilty to the offence, details of which said, on Wednesday, October 16, in Sheriff Street, Georgetown, he stole, from Nicholas Barrage, a quantity of clothing, fishing equipment, two compact still cameras, one cellular phone, one Iphone charger and one British passport, valued a total 5,000 pounds (Sterling) or G$1.5M.
Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt, prosecuting, successfully objected to bail, citing the prevalence of the crime and the quantum involved.
He added that De Freitas has a pending case of attempted murder in another court and, if granted pre-trial freedom, may not return for trial.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Paul Fung-a-Fat, for the defence, made a failed application for the defendant’s liberty, stating that the latter is ready to lodge his passport and other travel documents.
The lawyer said his client manages a store business and has a threatening language matter in another court.
However, De Freitas was denied freedom and the case was postponed to November 8 for statements to be submitted.
