The police at Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, yesterday afternoon shot and killed a suspected bandit after the man and an accomplice opened fire on them. The police, in a press release, stated that they were heading to the home of a villager, Veerapen Jebode, of Good Faith, Mahaicony who had reported that he returned home to find his house broken into.
According to the police, during their investigation, they came under fire from two men who were in the area and as they returned fire, one of the men was fatally shot while the other managed to escape into the backlands of the community.
It was also reported that the police were able to recover a .32 snub-nose revolver and a 9mm. pistol which were left behind at the scene of the shooting.
In addition, a bag containing a pair of binoculars, a cell phone and a cap were also found. Up to late yesterday the police were said to be scouring the backlands in search of the man who managed to evade them.
There was also the arrest of a male suspect who was apprehended while attempting to board a minibus.
