A forty-three-year old man who fractured his mother’s thumb while assaulting her was sentenced to nine months imprisonment by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs Marcus at the New Amsterdam Court.Roopnarine Ramnarine of Belvedere Village, Corentyne, confessed of taking a stick and lashing his mother’s hand. Prior to apologizing in open court, the man said, “Yes, I take a stick and beat my mother. Me was under the influence of alcohol.”

But Premnarine Ramnarine revealed that she was fed up with her son’s conduct and had made reports about his behaviour on two occasions before.
“This is the third time he do this to me although me have to cook for he. This time he break me thumb,” she said, lifting the hand which was in plaster of paris.
Police Sergeant Phillip Sherriff, prosecuting, said on October 16 last, at 19:15hrs, the virtual complainant was at home when the defendant returned home using a series of expletives.
He was rebuked by his mother and as a result he armed himself with a piece of wood and dealt her several lashes, resulting in an injury to her hand.
Asked by the court how long he would like to spend in prison, starting with a period of 18 months, the man replied, “Nine months Mam.”
