THE 144th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi will be observed today.
As part of the activities to commemorate this milestone in Guyana, Indian national Mr. Durai Vaiyapuri, a Gandhi devotee and consultant working in Guyana will be organising a day of solitude and fasting at the Mahatma Gandhi Monument at the Promenade Gardens on Middle Street.
The commemoration gets going at 07:00 hrs with the laying of floral tributes at the foot of the monument. Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and Indian High Commissioner Puran Mal Meena have been invited to lay tributes, Vaiyapuri told the Chronicle.
Following the laying of floral tributes, sweets will be distributed to children with restrictions.
An invitation is extended to all Gandhi devotees to be part of this observance.
A tent will be erected, and seating accommodation will be provided for at least 50 persons.
Essentially, Vaiyapuri said, the devotees will be fasting in condemnation of Freddie Kissoon’s wrong and ill-conceived writings against Mahatma Gandhi earlier this year. “It will be Satyagraha Ahimsa, a term coined by Gandhi, which literally means ‘hold on to the truth’. Gandhi steadfastly observed the concept or theory of non-violence and called for the Hindus and Muslims and Christians to live together in peace and harmony. It is a cause he lived and died for,” Vaiyapuri said.
