FOUR-year-old Varshani Seelall and her mother were travelling from the East Coast Demerara to their home at Cotton Tree, West Coast Berbice on Sunday when, at about 09:30 hrs, the motor car in which they were travelling became involved in an accident with a tundra, not far from their destination.
The girl is in critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital, while her mother was rushed to the Balwant Singh Hospital on East Street, Georgetown, where she had emergency surgery done to remove glass particles that became lodged in her left eye.
The driver of the motor car has also been admitted to the GPHC with severe injuries to the eyes.
The girl’s relatives told the Guyana Chronicle that the tundra, reportedly driven by a drunken driver, crashed into motor car PMM 8599, and the occupants of the car were rushed to the hospital by public-spirited persons.
The deeply distraught family members lamented the injuries sustained by their loved ones
“…all because of a drunken driver, who, less than 48 hours later, was driving on the roadways again, whilst Varshani’s life was in the balance, and her mother and driver in danger of losing their sight.”
They claimed that no police rank has so far visited the patients in hospital, nor sought to have statements taken, yet the driver is out driving again.
The child, who suffered severe head injuries and multiple fractures, was lifted from the wreckage unconscious, and to date has not regained consciousness.
Yesterday, on being discharged from the Balwant Singh Hospital, the child’s mother, Jeanita, visited the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the GPHC to see her daughter for the first time since the accident. Her daughter’s badly injured body caused her to become hysterical, and she had to be whisked out of the ICU.
Even as the girl’s family members look to the doctors for swift and efficient medical intervention, they immediately went into a mode of prayer, supplicating for a miracle for her recovery.
Varshni was described by her aunts and uncles as a cute, clever and brave little child. They recalled that when President Donald Ramotar visited Cotton Tree on August 23 last, she performed the honours of placing a garland around his neck.
