Riddim Squad, Santos secure wins in GFA Premier League

BOTH RIDDIM Squad and Santos Football Clubs respectively secured 1-0 and 2-1 victories over Camptown and Fruta Conquerors, when action in the Georgetown Football Association’s (GFA) Georgetown Zone Premier League qualifiers continued last Wednesday evening at the Tucville ground.

Julian Forris netted Riddim Squad’s winning goal in the 90th minute, while Yassel Cantzelaar and Leron Charles scored for Santos in the 9th and 64th minutes respectively, with Eon Alleyne pulling one back for Fruta Conquerors in the 46th minute.
The victory for Riddim Squad, which was their third from four matches, has propelled them to nine points and places them second in the points standing, three points adrift of leaders Western Tigers (12 points) who have already booked a place in the Guyana Football Federation’s (GFF) 16-team Premier League which is set for October 6.
Camptown remain on one point after four matches and will play their final game in the GFA qualifiers tonight, when they come up against Pele in the feature game of a double-header card at the Tucville ground.
Santos earned three points from the win, taking them to five points from four matches and they will face the Tigers in their final match on Sunday, where a win for them will take them to eight and give them a slight chance to qualify for a spot in the GFF’s Premier League.
Fruta Conquerors, on the other hand, are on four points from three matches and will play their fourth match tonight versus Riddim Squad from 18:00hrs. A victory will take them to seven points with one match remaining, which, if they secure a win in both, will give them a spot in the GFF’s competition.
The GFF allotted five spots to the GFA, with national champions Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United and Guyana Defence Force being awarded automatic spots, hence there are still two spots remaining for the taking, after Western Tigers took one with their present points lead in the GFA qualifiers.
Who will be the other two teams is a question which will be answered tonight and Sunday, as already Upper Demerara, East Coast Demerara, West Demerara and Berbice have completed their qualifiers and submitted the names of the teams that will represent them.
Berbice will be represented by Rosignol United and New Amsterdam United, Upper Demerara by Milerock, Silver Shattas and Winners Connection. Buxton United and BV/Triumph will represent East Coast Demerara, while Den Amstel and Young Achievers will wear West Demerara colours.
East Dank Demerara, Essequibo and Bartica are currently involved in a playoff to determine who will fill the 16th and final spot of the tournament. At stake will be $3M for the winners and $2M for the second-placed team, with the third- and fourth-placers earning $1M and $500 000 respectively.
