President Ramotar urges students to lift cultural levels – through the appreciation of Guyana’s multi-cultural/multi- ethnic society

PRESIDENT Donald Ramotar on Friday encouraged thousands of students from all levels of the school system gathered at the National Park for an education rally to lift their cultural levels by appreciating Guyana’s multi-cultural and multi- ethnic society.

altThe Head of State declared that education by itself helps them to lift their cultural levels, and while they must ensure that emphasis is placed on academics, they must also be able to appreciate the cultural aspects of life which are extremely important in moulding a good society and helping to develop the quality of life of all Guyanese.
Mr. Ramotar highlighted areas such as works of art, literature, music and the creative arts, while stating that he also wants them to be good technicians, managers, and good professionals when they grow up.
Pointing out that Guyana has a multi-cultural and multi ethnic society where persons come from rich traditions and background, he said that in this process Guyanese forge ahead to build a distinct Guyanese culture and identity.
According to him, all of this will contribute to the further enrichment of Guyanese culture and allow all Guyanese to be inheritors of a powerful, strong and appreciative culture.
The Head of State also urged students to fight against selfishness and greed and to remember that they all must help develop their communities and be ready to share and help each other.
Ramotar declared that the country has come a far way, while acknowledging that it still has a lot of distance to cover
“But we have come a distance and we are laying the foundation so that we can go to higher and higher levels,” he said.
The education rally was held as a part of the Education ministry’s calendar of activities for education month 2013 which is being observed under the theme “Transforming classrooms for the 21st century.”
