Drainage, garbage problems within Mon Repos /La Reconnaissance NDC unbearable

DESPITE the many complaints, the Mon Repos /La Reconnaissance Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC), which has responsibility responsible for the Mon Repos/Lusignan/Annandale communities, has shown no interest in having the drains and canals within the area cleared for better drainage.

About two weeks ago residents of these communities had approached this publication lamenting the situation with their drains and canals as well as the growing garbage mounds in some areas.
They highlighted that as a result of weeds and mosses in the drains and trenches they suffer from heavy flooding when it rains, but NDC officials there have still continued to ignore their cries for help.
However, the NDC is claiming that they are unable to carry out work as a result of lack of equipment and shortage of workers.
Residents who spoke to this publication said that they are fed up of pleading with the local authority to perform their duties.
They said that just like the officials who live in a clean and clear environment, they pay their taxes as well and expect the very same benefits, that is, a flood and garbage-free environment.

The citizens emphasised that drainage in the area is extremely difficult because the outlets and trenches are now blocked by lush vegetation and garbage and when it rains the floods are severe and the water takes very long to recede.
The NDC on many occasions admitted that one of the major issues affecting the area is flooding and the council is doing everything in its authority to fix this matter.
Residents opined that they (the NDC) are not doing anything to rectify the matter as officials of the council have been accused of “not paying attention to the areas at all.”
When this publication revisited the areas earlier this week, it was discovered that the garbage piles found on the roadside appeared to have grown tremendously over time, and the garbage tends to fall into the trenches which causes blockages.
One resident claimed that the garbage situation there is beyond council’s control and an eyesore, while noting that it is impossible to walk to the corners of the road as the garbage is everywhere.
The residents have described this situation as being very “filthy, unsightly and very unhealthy” and are asking the NDC to look at what the real situation is and not to run behind unimportant personal issues.
Additionally, the residents are claiming that the NDC has taken a stand not to listen to the residents at all and their complaints are ignored by the officials since the first article that was published in this newspaper.
The citizens have accused the NDC officials of being too “petty” and “irresponsible” and are urging them to “get to work to make this place fit for us.”
