THE Doobay Renal Centre since its inception has been seeking to work in close collaboration with the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and has even performed a few operations on their patients who suffered renal failure.
In its attempt to strengthen the relationship, Dr Budhendra Doobay, in an interview with the media, indicated that a total of four dialysis machines were donated to the hospital which allows for the commencement of a dialysis clinic there.
There are plans also in the pipeline to introduce a bigger and better health facility which caters to the treatment of a wide range of non-communicable diseases at a greatly subsided cost.
Dr Doobay is hopeful that even patients who are unable to afford good quality medical care can access the facility which is intended to represent an expansion of the service offered by the Doobay Renal Centre located at Annandale, East Coast of Demerara.
It is expected that further collaboration will be realised whereby subsidies and tax breaks will be afforded the Doobay Renal Centre.
The expansion plans are being pursued intensely even as the Ministry of Health places high on its agenda plans to address Non- Communicable Diseases (NCDs).
This strategic move is aimed at addressing the various forms of cancer, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and chronic pulmonary diseases as well as cataract.
NCDs are usually fostered by the abuse of alcohol, tobacco smoking, sedentary (inactive lifestyles), and bad food choices such as those laden with fat, salt and sugar.
He had also pointed out that with the extension of the facility management is looking to make it into “a little hospital” so affordable care can be given to all Guyanese.
The renal failure care offered at the institution is supported by expert medical practitioners at McMaster Medical Centre in Canada who offer their service on a voluntary basis. Dr Doobay is hoping that it would be possible for this facility to be opened to everybody across the country.
He emphasised that even though one has no money, they must have proper medical care.
A release issued by the institution had stated that 11 patients benefited from free arteriovenous fistula surgeries that were done on their forearms. The surgeries were performed free of cost at the GPHC by Dr S. Rammohan and Dr Doobay on July 27 and 28, while one superficialization of a venous graft was also done.
Arteriovenous fistula, an abnormal connection or passageway between an artery and vein, is often surgically created for use in dialysis in people with severe kidney disease.
The release also said that the Doobay Medical Centre is working to commence kidney transplants at the GPHC later this year.
