Baby among three injured in Region One accident

TWO women were, up to press time last evening, being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) for injuries sustained in an accident that occurred in Region One.

A baby girl has also been hospitalised in serious condition at Region Two’s Suddie Hospital for injuries sustained in that same accident.

Businesswoman Sabrina Williams, 31; Karen Daniels, 28, and 14-month-old Nadira Daniels were travelling in a wagon-type vehicle from Coomacka village to Tabla in Region One (Barima/Waini) when they suddenly heard two loud explosions; the next thing they knew, they were being treated for bruises and lacerations about the body.

Williams’ husband, Dennis, told the Chronicle last evening that he received a call about the tragedy while he was at home, and when he arrived on scene, the injured, including the baby, were being prepared to be airlifted to the Suddie Hospital.

The man said he was later informed that the vehicle in which the injured were travelling had suffered front and rear-tyre blowouts, causing it to topple. The driver, not seriously injured in the accident, has allegedly been taken into police custody.

Upon the injured trio’s arrival at Suddie, it was determined that the two adults needed to travel to Georgetown for further medical attention, while the baby was retained at the Suddie Hospital, because her condition could have worsened had she travelled to the city.

Some amount of confusion and protest was occasioned by members of the public after the health personnel at the Suddie Hospital attempted to transport the women to the city overland, despite their condition. The women were eventually air dashed to the Ogle Airport, and were immediately transported to the GPHC.

A nurse who treated the accident victims at the Suddie Hospital was also forced to seek medical attention at the GPHC after she was stuck with a needle whilst attending to one of the injured.
This newspaper was informed that Daniels suffered lacerations to her left foot and left hand, and severe injuries to the chest and neck.
