Robbery with violence defendant refused bail

WAYNE Anthony Griffith, of Lot 110 Tucville, Georgetown, was remanded to prison yesterday, on a robbery with violence charge.

He appeared before Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, accused of having on Tuesday, August 27, at Water Street, also in the city, robbed Bibi Khan of a gold chain, valued $180,000 and, at the time, made use of personal violence on her.
Police Corporal Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, said the virtual complainant was walking on the street when the defendant snatched her jewel and dealt a cuff to her abdomen.
The prosecutor, successfully, objected to bail for the defendant, citing the prevalence of the offence, the penalty it attracts and the fact that, if he secures the grant, he may not return for trial.
Attorney-at-law, Mr. Paul Fung-a-Fat, for the defence, mentioned that Griffith had a similar case in another court but it was dismissed.
The lawyer said, after the woman had been robbed, she was looking for a man with plait hair and Griffith was among eight other males with no plaits put on an identification parade.
As the prosecution was not in possession of the file because the investigation is incomplete, the Chief Magistrate ordered that it be ready for September 13, until when the defendant will be incarcerated.
