Guyana commended on smooth hosting of CASA Championships

WINNERS in the just concluded Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Senior Championships were last Saturday evening presented with their prizes when the closing ceremony was held at the Grand Coastal Inn.

Guyana won the overall title, defending champions Barbados finished in second place while Jamaica finished third and the Trinidad and Tobago team placed fourth.
In terms of performance of the individual teams Guyana took top honours, claiming the men’s and women’s team titles. Barbados were also the defending champions for the women’s title, while the Trinidad team had ruled the men’s team competition last year.
The Barbados veterans’ team managed to defend their title, after they pushed the Guyana veterans’ team to the second place position.
The Barbados women’s team finished second, and Jamaica were third. In the men’s team competition the Cayman Islands team finished behind Guyana, while Jamaica yet again finished third. The Trinidad team fourth, Barbados fifth and OECS were sixth.
OECS finished third in the vets competition and Trinidad were fourth.
Over in the singles category, Guyana also walked away with big wins. Guyana’s Nicolette Fernandes received her trophy for defending her women’s singles title, while in the men’s singles first-timer Sunil Seth finished in second place behind Jamaica’s Chris Binnie.
Guyana also won third place and fourth place in the women’s singles taken by Ashley Khalil and Mary Fung-a-Fat respectively. Guyana’s Ashley DeGroot is also now ranked fifth in the Caribbean from her performance and former Caribbean junior champion Keisha Jeffrey is sixth.
In the men’s singles Guyana’s Richard Chin ended third.
The ceremony featured an address from outgoing CASA president Craig Archer who spoke of the upcoming Pan American Championships and Central and the Caribbean Games, noting that Guyana qualified for the events.
Archer also commended Guyana for the smooth hosting of the Championships.
