Guyana dominate Suriname to take IGG Cycling title : … Suriname Girls take Time Trial title

HAVING seen their female counterparts lose the Time Trial to the Surinamese earlier in the day, Guyana’s male cycling team took their Time Trials and later dominated their opponents from the Eastern country in the 36-mile road event, to crown off a fine day yesterday in the cycling category of the first leg of this year’s Inter-Guiana Games. Suriname’s four-member team comprising Safan Renfurm, brothers Dion and Daryell Liauw and Jaleel McRooy completed the six-lap Time Trial event held around the inner circuit of the National Park in a time of 13m: 30.46secs.
The Guyanese quartet, led by 2012 Joint Junior Sportsman-of-the-Year Paul DeNobrega and including Shaquille Agard, Hamza Eastman and Akeem Arthur, completed the same journey 1m: 08secs faster than the Surinamese, stopping the clock at 12m: 22.37secs.
In fact, the Guyanese sector times per laps read 2:06, 4:05, 6:07, 8:09 and 10:17 seconds before their final timings, in comparison to Suriname’s 2:28, 4:31, 6:47, 8:59 and 11:14, before their final timings for the event – a strong testament of the home team’s domination.
The Surinamese Girls team, made up of Maravelle Springer, Zuella Burnel and Tamia Slyngaard did their three laps time trial in a time of 8m. 07:60secs then watched as the Guyanese team of Marica Dick and Toshawna Doris stopped the clock at 8m.22:96secs.
However, both Dick and Doris had much to smile about later yesterday afternoon when they humiliated their opponents in the Girls 40km Road Race which saw them pedal from Nismes, to Leonora and back to the place of origin for the finish, with Dick winning same in a time of 1h. 18:34.12secs.
However, Doris was a distant second, finishing 12m: 2.26secs after Dick, with Slyngaard and Burnel stopping the clock at the same time as the Liauw brothers crossed the finish line in the Boys’ event.
He did so, only after Eastman and Agard displayed what can best be described as ‘total annihilation of the course for which they were asked to pedal from Nismes to Vergenoegen and back, a distance of 60km, doing so in a time of 1h. 39m: 42.34secs, after they made their way to the front of the race at the start and never looked back.
Arthur, who completed the Guyanese team, following DeNobrega’s withdrawal for this event for personal reasons following orders from Team Coco’s Guyana management team, was third with a time of 1h. 48m: 05secs, with Daryell Liauw coming in 2m: 42secs later, the same time that was accredited to both Slyngaard and Burnel his brother Dion Liauw.
At the completion of the event, national cycling coach Hassan Mohamed expressed heartfelt pleasure at the performance of the Guyanese, even though they lost in the Girls Time Trial, while he wished the Surinamese best of luck next time around.
