Heavy rains cause flooding in several East Coat villages

SEVERAL areas on the East Coast Demerara were flooded through heavy and continuous rainfall last Saturday night and yesterday morning.

altAreas highly affected are from Ann’s Grove to Sparendaam, and residents from the affected areas told the Guyana Chronicle that the water rose continuously and entered their homes at a very rapid rate.
Many persons are in complete distress over the situation, especially those who live in flat houses and the lower flats of houses.
The water had risen to approximately 8 inches in certain areas, which saw residents piling sand bags in front of their doors and entrances to prevent the water from entering their homes.
Meanwhile, shops were closed and business persons were forced to relocate their goods to safety, and some are still claiming minor losses.
When contacted, representatives of the pumping stations along the East Coast highlighted that they were unable to start pumping the water out as a result of the very high tides yesterday morning.
However, workers from the Regional Democratic Council of Region 4 (Demerara/Mahaica) were dispatched to various areas to clean the drains and remove blockages.
