Guyana Relief Council assists more fire victims

THE Guyana Relief Council (GRC) made donations to 12 fire victims, on Wednesday, at its Lot X West of Public Road, Riverview, Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
GRC Welfare Officer, Ms. Rohini Bonar told the Guyana Chronicle that 56 families were assisted for this year and the charity recorded 25 welfare cases.
She reminded that, once there is a blaze, GRC responds and, when it cannot go to far-fetched areas, it works through the various ministries to deliver much needed items to the affected. Bonar said GRC garners resources through fund-raising efforts and also benefits from donations from which it caters for disaster victims.
At the presentation, only four of the 12 intended beneficiaries were present to receive the mattresses, stoves, kitchen utensils and clothing, among other things.
One of the recipients, Edgar Downer, who lost his Quamina Street house, also in Georgetown on July 6, said he is very appreciative of the kind assistance.
He lamented that he lost all his worldly possessions when flames ripped through his home but pledged he will strive to be comfortable again.
Another beneficiary, Rajwanti Thakurdeen, of Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, was pleased with what she got, having suffered from the destruction of her house on June 6.

Was consumed
One more victim, seamstress Pamela Singh said her Princes Street residence, in the city, too, was consumed by a conflagration on June 21.
She explained that, with what is donated to her by the GRC, she would be able to start afresh with the needed basics.
The others of the 12, who were in receipt of the largess hail, primarily, from Region 4(Demerara/Mahaica) and, to a lesser extent, Region 6 (East Berbice/Corentyne).
Among them were Jacqueline Brusche, Edgar Downer and Socota Fortune, all of Quamina Street, too; Gadwanttie Singh of Princes Street; Kesha Cheong of Sophia and Nigel Ritch of D’Urban Street, all from the city; Allison Herbert of Bare Root and Rajwanti Thakurdeen of Lusignan, both on the East Coast of Demerara; Parbattie Singh of Cromarty Dam, Berbice; Vanessa Fortune of Soesdyke and Shonette Herbert of Coverden, two East Bank Demerara addresses.
