SINCE the assumption of duty of the current US ambassador, Mr. Brent Hardt has been most vocal. He has commented on a whole host of matters. Most of them concerning matters which are domestic in nature. They range from the issue of radio licences, corruption, bad governance, local democracy, and the list goes on. I do not for one moment consider these matters not to be important. But they are all domestic matters which really ought not to concern the American embassy.
In recent times, there have been two very significant issues which concern the US embassy in Georgetown, but on neither matters have I heard the customary loud and emphatic pronouncements coming from the ambassador. They are the visa fraud and scandal recently uncovered, and the interest of Sithe Global, which has been contracted by the Government of Guyana to execute the construction of Guyana’s first Hydro Electric Project. Sithe Global is an American company involved in the development, construction, acquisition and operation of electric generation facilities in attractive markets around the world.
Here we have a subsidiary of an America-based multinational company being denied by the Opposition the opportunity to invest in Guyana and the US ambassador is absolutely silent on the matter.
Sithe Global was initially formed in 2004 by investment funds managed by Reservoir Capital Group (“Reservoir”), an American company. A part of the functions of any embassy is to advocate for the interests of its citizens, both natural and corporate, in the country in which the embassy is located. It is therefore part of the function and duty of Mr. Brent Hardt to stand in support of Sithe Global. To the ambassador I say, your silence is deafening.
