THE charred remains of Martin D’Aguiar, 35, was discovered early Sunday morning after his one-bedroom, Lot 89 Grant 1780, Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice home went up in flames. The former employee of Skeldon Sugar Estate had lived alone for the past four years and it is believed that his house was destroyed by fire because a kerosene lamp may have accidentally fallen in the house that had no electricity.
According to the neighbour of the deceased, Vijay Ramnarine, the blaze might have started between 12:30 hrs and 01:00 hrs and the neighbourhood was alerted by the raging heat.
“We had no idea that Martin was in the house because there was a wedding nearby and we thought that he was there celebrating. It was not until around 03:00 hrs the firefighters told us that a body was found under the rubbles,” he said.
Others commended the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) and the police for their timely response although saddened at the gruesome death of D’Aguiar.
“He was a very helpful person and one who was committed towards community development. It is very sad to see him perish like this,” another neighbour tearfully lamented.
D’Aguiar, who hailed from Islington, Greater New Amsterdam, leaves to mourn his parents and eleven siblings.
His body is at the Skeldon Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem expected to be done later this week.
