Linden Secondary Schools U-19 basketball final set for tomorrow

THE 2013 Linden Secondary Schools Under-19 basketball T-Shirts, to support their right as winners, are here for the presentation to the new champions when this tournament concludes tomorrow, at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court in Linden. Being staged for the 9th straight year the champions will emerge from either the unbeaten Christianburg/Wismar Secondary (Multi) or their arch rivals and first-time finalists Wisburg Secondary when they meet at 16:00hrs. The preceding match at 14:00hrs will see the losing semifinalists Linden Foundation Secondary take on last year’s winners Linden Technical Institute (LTI)
This year’s tournament, which was organised by the Linden Amateur Basketball Association, will come to an end after several hitches along the way caused it to prolong.
This year’s United States-based sponsors include EURON Equipment Repairs who donated the 1st Place Trophy and replicas, the Haynes Foundation out of New Jersey, Marlon Josiah who was responsible for the 2nd place trophy and replicas, Orin Louison donor for the 3rd place trophy and replicas and Lennox Allicock the 4th place trophy and medals. Louis Webster has sponsored the All Star T-Shirts and the championship T-Shirts, compliments of former national women’s head coach Linden ‘Sancho’ Alphonso.
The twelve individual prizes which include the Most Valuable Player-of-the-Final on both teams were shared by United States-based Maxie Stephens and Linden Alphonso, the former national women’s head coach.  Ten more individual trophies, among which are for the Best Offensive Player, Best Defensive Player and Most Disciplined team, were donated by Maxie Stephens also.
Locally there is the continued sponsorship from beverage giant Banks DIH Limited and coming on board also were Two Brothers Gas Station with funds to outfit the school teams with brand new uniforms.
However, basketball fans who have been following this tournament will concede that the biggest surprise this year was the performance of previously unknown Wisburg Secondary who are in their first final in the nine-year tournament history.
The Wisburg side come into this final after losing two matches, one of which was against the Multi boys whom they oppose in the championship game and the other to Linden Foundation whom they defeated in the semifinal.
