Land of Canaan murder trial begins

A MIXED jury at the Demerara Assizes yesterday heard how Patrick Daley, called “Ringo”, met his death on September 15, 2009 at about 05.30 am, when neighbours attacked him with cutlasses and an iron rod as he was in a bath hut outside of his home. Resulting from that attack, Kurleigh Goodluck of Land of Canaan, EBD is facing an indictment for the murder of Patrick Daley.

Prosecutrix Miss Renita Singh told Justice Dawn Gregory and the jury, “This is a case where there was a joint enterprise between three persons — Shortman, Bucko and Goodluck, as they stood outside the toilet with Patrick locked inside. Shortman, having two cutlasses; Bucko, with a liquid substance in a bottle; and Goodluck, with an iron in hand, planned to cause serious harm to Patrick Daley, or to kill him.
They all acted jointly. Goodluck opened the door with the iron rod, Bucko threw the substance on (Daley), and Shortman chopped Patrick about the body; then Goodluck took the iron and lashed Patrick on the head.

“They then fled the scene, and Goodluck picked them up with his car and furthered their escape. Patrick Daley died, and Kurleigh Goodluck was later charged with murder.”

The trial is continuing. (George Barclay)
