GUYANA’S Victoria Arjoon and Nyron Joseph set up matches with their archrivals, as Guyana made it into half of the finals in the Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Junior Championships, when the competition progressed on Tuesday at the Cascadia and Queen’s Park Oval squash courts in Trinidad and Tobago. Joseph and Arjoon, along with Akeila Wiltshire and Benjamin Mekdeci, made it into the finals, which were expected to be contested yesterday. ..
Four-time Caribbean champion Arjoon was yesterday set to come up against T&T’s Charlotte Knaggs after she defeated Talia Abdool 3-0.
Knaggs and Arjoon have gone head-to-head in several finals over the years. It was Knaggs, who prevented Arjoon grasping a title last year when the two met in the Girls’ Under-17 finals.
Over in the Boys’ Under-17 Joseph was fighting to retain his title against nemesis and tournament regular Nku Patrick. Joseph had first overcome Patrick for a title back in 2011, in the Boys’ Under-15 category.
The two were at in again last year, but Joseph disposed of Patrick in the quarterfinals, before he went on to take the title in his match against Bermuda’s D’Mario Thompson. Joseph on Tuesday, ousted Sean Murphy 11-8, 11-3, 9-11, 11-2 in a quarter-final matchup before he moved on to deal out a 3-0 thrashing against 2012 Boys’ Under-15 champion Julian Jervis.
Mekdeci was fighting for the Boys Under-15 title against Jonathan Walker, after getting past Tahjia Lumley 3-0 in the semifinals. The National Under-15 champion had earlier defeated Rithew Saywack 11-4, 11-5, 11-3.
Wiltshire got past Guyana’s Gabrielle Fraser with a 3-0 win to make it into the finals, where she’ll face Barbados Gylla McKenzie. McKenzie got into the finals after defeating Guyana’s Larissa Wiltshire.
Fraser and Larissa played for the third place position. Guyana should also cop another third place position as Steven Xavier and Jean Claude Jeffrey came up against each other in the third place playoff.
Xavier beat Julian Morrison 11-6, 11-8, 11-8 in the quarterfinals but later lost 1-3 against Mandela Patrick. Jeffrey defeated Brandon Straker 11-4, 11-6, 11-5, then lost 1-3 against Ashante Smith.
In the Boys’ Under-13 Shomari Wiltshire was stopped in the semifinals by Kai Bentick when he lost 4-11, 6-11, 5-11.
Guyana also had minor wins and losses in the consolation playoffs.
