DEFENDING champions Wismar/Christianburg moved one step closer to retaining their title in the national Digicel Schools Football competition, when they defeated semifinalists, St George’s in a one-sided showdown yesterday. Battling on a hard, heavy Beterverwagting field which stood up to an hour-long shower, the Linden side crushed St George’s High of Georgetown 6-1 to make it into the final. Wismar/Christianburg completely outplayed their opponents as they were superior in skill, talent and organisation of play.
They commanded ball possession from the opening whistle and shortly after began exploiting St George’s weak defence.
The Lindeners went ahead in the 11th minute through a Marimarleque Davidson goal which caught St George’s goalkeeper Royston Dublin off his line and found the back of the net.
Dublin, recently crowned MVP for his goalkeeping in the Milo U-20 Schools tournament had quite an off-day. Seemingly he hadn’t a clue of what to do.
The boys from the mining town had numerous attempts on goal with their steady approach to St George’s’ uprights but could not put away most of the opportunities due to an off-target shot or fumble.
However, they managed to keep the grip on the match, scoring with the assistance of the wind in the first half.
Donovan Francis (30th) and Davidson (39th) and Shane Luckie (41st) accounted for Linden’s other goals in the first half while the opposition’s lone goal was scored by Neil Cameron in the 28th minute.
Luckie was a progressive substitute for Linden because of his success. Linden finished the game with two subs while St George’s used three.
In the second half Jashawn Moore (58th) and Nigel Caesar, who scored in the first minute of injury/stoppage time completed the scoring
