STUDENTS of the Cheddi Jagan School of Dentistry yesterday were made fully aware of the most contemporary advancements in dentistry today during a lecture by Dr. Larry Grillo, entitled “The Cutting Edge Technology in Dentistry”.
The lecture took place at the Dental School, Carmichael Street, Georgetown, and is among a series of events being organised by Dr. Soumi SenGupta and Associates, of 122 Laluni Street, Queenstown, in collaboration with the Dental School and Dr. Larry Grillo.
Dr. SenGupta in an interview with the Guyana Chronicle noted that Guyana has come leaps and bounds in terms of its range of services being offered by dental professionals in recent years and he is very confident that the now thriving Dental School was inspired by Dr. Grillo’s presentation.
He also noted that he believes in giving back to the community and one of the ways that he wants to do this is in the educational sector.
Dr. SenGupta said that in the next five years the Dental School will release 60 qualified dentists into the health sector and that will be a proud moment for the country, but the students need to be aware of the advancements in technology in dentistry.
Dr. Larry Grillo who is the senior partner of Aventura Dental Arts, graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio Dental School in 1986. He works closely with oral surgeons, orthodontists and periodontists in the multidisciplinary treatment of patients requiring implant therapy and complex, esthetic, dental rehabilitations. He has extensive experience in the treatment, planning and restorative aspects of implant dentistry and is well versed with the various currently available prosthetic options.
He noted that he was very excited to deliver the lecture and to broaden the horizons of the students. He went on to say that “we cannot stop the advancement of technology but as humans we have to keep up with the advancements.”
Meanwhile, he praised the enthusiasm of the dental students and said that they were eager to learn and he hopes to give a lot more lectures at the school and work along with the other dentists.
Meanwhile, Director of the School of Dentistry and Principal Dental Officer, Dr. Shameer Ali said that it is an honour to have Dr. Grillo with them and he also thanked Dr. SenGupta for taking time out of his busy schedule to be a part of the lecture. He also agreed that technology is making dentistry global and one does not have to travel to the United States or the United Kingdom to be able to perform certain tasks. “We can do it right in Guyana as long as we have the technology and keep up with the advancements.”
