Berbice Assizes jurors to return July 18

THE 60 jurors expected to serve during the criminal sessions of the Berbice Assizes have been told to return on July 18, as there were, as yet, no cases to be presented.

Justice Roxanne George, who held the brief for assigned Judge Navindranauth Singh explained to the panel, yesterday, that, while state counsel was absent, the prosecution is facing difficulty with accused persons and witnesses.
However, it is anticipated that the State may be in a position to present a case in the next two weeks.
Concerns were raised, though, over the inability to contact either the indicted persons or the witnesses in 30 cases scheduled for trial.
State Prosecutor Diana Kaulesar had told the Guyana Chronicle, last month, that several visits were made to the homes of those to be tried and the witnesses but without any success.
“Apparently, these persons have moved from their respective locations and have not left a forwarding address. In some instances, the homes, in which they once lived, have either been sold or rented to persons who are not au fait with their whereabouts. Radio messages were also sent but no one has responded,” she reported.
