60 participants get continuing education at GPL Health and Wellness Seminar

The Guyana Power and Light Inc., in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, yesterday, hosted a Health and Wellness Seminar at the Regency Hotel, Brickdam,  Georgetown.

According to a release issued at the seminar, the mission of GPL is to provide an expanding customer base with electricity service, which is technically, financially, and environmentally sustainable, achieving best practices and acceptable international norms delivered by “our people’s performance in accordance with company values to the highest ideals of work, excellence and integrity.”
The seminar aimed to provide continuing education that will assist employees with chronic diseases and illnesses to better manage their illnesses and maintain healthier lifestyles.
It also offered effective consultation for employees, thereby ensuring that their physical and health needs are met in a satisfactory manner. In addition, the session sought to assist them to function more effectively at work, as well as to collaborate with stakeholders to assist the company with the relevant professionals and resources to foster a comprehensive mental rehabilitation of the affected staff.
The release stated the objectives of the session as:
* To provide participants with information on the facilities for testing diabetes and blood pressure (hypertension).
* To emphasise the importance and necessity of foot-care.
* To underscore the value of exercise/physical activity and knowing one’s body mass index.
* To underscore the value of appropriate food and nutrition.
The seminar saw the attendance of some 59 participants and some of the day’s activities included blood pressure testing, blood sugar testing and presentations on diabetes, hypertension, nutrition and foot-care, with presentations being done by various officials of the Ministry of Health.
