Cornelius, in his remarks on the occasion, told the young people present that he was very proud to see their response to the project.
He advised them that, as leaders, they need to have a vision for the future and, in doing so, must think of the other young people of today being leaders of tomorrow.
Cornelius said this move, by the Government, to have the hinterland young people engaged in entrepreneurial and apprenticeship schemes will create a number of opportunities which will aid in bettering theirs and the lives of others, their families, communities and Guyana, as a whole.
He charged the intended beneficiaries to grab this prestigious opportunity and not let it pass them as he sees it will bear fruit, creating new leaders of communities and the country.
Historic moment
Pierre, in his address, said it was a very historic moment for him to be there as he envisages the YEAP gearing young people of Region 1 to take up leading roles across the region.
He pointed out that the Matarkai Sub-Region is on the verge of serious economic development, the Mabaruma Sub- Region is where all the administrative activities take place and farming is the dominant activity in the Moruca Sub-Region.
Pierre said the fact that so many young people have responded to the government’s call is expected to gear them to become leaders of their respective communities and villages.
His experience, as a leader in the region, is that there were times when his decision was not that of the masses but had been made after consulting and seeking the best way forward to enhance development within, he explained.
Pierre said serving as a Toshao, before being elevated to head the region, was a very difficult time since decisions had to be made in the best interest of the people and to get the desired results.
This, he emphasised, is a great opportunity afforded the young people of Region 1 in preparing them to be leaders of tomorrow and, in closing, he admonished them to be prepared for the challenges ahead.
