Auditions for Guyana Fashion Weekend set for today –at Water Chris Hotel

THE Guyana Fashion Week 2013 kicks off today at the Water Chris Hotel, and auditions will be staged for both designers and models. This biennial event is in its sixth hosting, and CEO Sonia Noel promises a week packed with activity and events surrounding the birth and growth of Guyana’s fashion industry, mixed with all the elements of the creative arts.

altGFW 6 is set for an August 4 launching in grand style, given a glimpse of what to expect from its upcoming segments. The proceedings this year will be very different from what had obtained in past years.
Guyana Fashion Week is set for the October 20/27, and this year will bring together six races to pronounce one people; six days of fashion activity to celebrate one fashion week; six senses, including the mind, to chart one vision; six types of art to claim one creative industry; six nationalities would be present to identify our collective brand; and this, GFW’s sixth event, would continue to forge Guyana’s unique destiny.
GFW pays tribute to water’s sustainable properties in declaring that water is essential to our very existence. There is no life without water, so GFW 2013 hopes to bring life to fashion in this respect, and consequently bring fashion to its vibrant existence.
The five-year history made an indelible impression on the promotion of the Caribbean aesthetic as a viable global style alternative. Five years marked the end of phase one of the plan to develop a Guyanese fashion industry. It goes without saying that part and parcel of this movement is identity branding, which includes mobilizing all aspects of the arts to corral the components of a truly creative industry.
This is the stuff of which sustainable development is made – the reliance on economic diversification strategies to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. All of which ensures youth empowerment and nation-building action.
“There is so much raw and untapped talent in the creative industries in Guyana! It is our intention to harness, expose and develop this talent, as well as to promote consistently regional networking opportunities,” Sonia Noel has said.
By 3pm yesterday, all interested designers should have submitted their sketches, five (5) the minimum, to be considered for audition.
And models of all shapes, sizes and genders are expected to audition between 3pm and 5pm. Male models are asked to walk with a pair of shoes, and fitted jeans or pants; and female models are asked to walk with a pair of heeled shoes, no less than four (4) inches high, leggings, and mid-riff tops.
