Digicel schools tournament to be launched next Monday

THE MUCH anticipated Digicel-sponsored, nationwide Inter-school Football Championships will on Monday be launched for the third successive year, in the Savannah Suite of the Pegasus Hotel at 10:45hrs.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony and Minister of Education Ms Priya Manickchand, Banks DIH’s Sales Director Carlton Joao, Guyana Football Federation president Christopher Matthias and Digicel’s head of Marketing Jacqueline James, are expected to deliver remarks.
Wismar/Christianburg Secondary School (WCSS) are the defending champions, thanks to Marmalique Davidson’s five goals, which enabled his school to inflict a 5-2 drubbing on surprise finalists Waramadong at the Police Sports Club ground last year.
This was after they lost to the Government Technical Institute (GTI) in the inaugural tournament the previous year, and no doubt, their present form will see them enter this year’s tournament as firm favourites, since they recently claimed the Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Memorial Inter-school football tournament, in the mining town of Linden.
Many schools have been eagerly awaiting this tournament, with some of them participating in the Milo Under-20 tournament, while the sponsors also held a coaches seminar and later sent the coaches into various Regions across Guyana, to disseminate what they would had learnt to the schools they were assigned to.
According to Digicel’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Gregory Dean, this was done with the aim of making this year’s tournament a highly competitive one, as they embarked on ensuring that the tournament, which is expected to attract over 100 schools, does not produce one-sided results in some matches.
