GRA adopting proactive, reactive anti-smuggling measures

THE Law Enforcement and Investigation (LEID) arm of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) is continuing its very active anti-smuggling campaign by adopting both proactive and reactive measures.

Manager/Acting Public Relations Officer, Ms. Marcia Harris said Tuesday they are constantly on the ground to ensure their best is done to stem the flow of smuggled items into the country.
In an interview with the Guyana Chronicle, she said they are more present in the Corentyne, Berbice areas and wherever else it is perceived that there are some of the illegal activities or if they have intelligence to that effect.
“And so our law enforcement department is working very feverishly to ensure that we curb that in any way that we can and, in order to get that done, we are very much dependent on members of the public,” Ms. Harris stated.
She invited members of the public, who have relevant information to make contact with the GRA and provide it.
Harris pointed out that the agency would of course strive to ensure the tips can be verified and will also be happy if the persons providing them inform how they can be contacted.
Assuring informants of strict confidentiality, she said the GRA will take every step necessary to act speedily on what is reported.
Harris said they are, currently, sensitising the public through the various media, including radio, the television programmes ‘Focus on GRA’ and ‘Let’s talk tax’ and by way of notices.
The agency is also encouraging persons to be knowledgeable of what are considered contraband and penalties for persons involved with it, she said.
According to her, persons can call the hotline telephone number 227-6060, from which they will be directed to the relevant department to provide information.
