Collapsed Moco Moco Bridge to be rebuilt with new design

THE Ministry of Public Works has chosen a new design for rebuilding the Moco Moco Bridge in South Rupununi which collapsed two weeks ago under the weight of a hauler transporting a D-4 bulldozer.

A source close to the regional administration of Region 9 (Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo) told the Guyana Chronicle, the rebuilt structure would see the installation of toes on the existing piers to prevent movement by large volumes of water in the creeks during prolonged periods of rainfall.
A steel input would also form a strong reinforcement and presently a contractor is being sought to begin the works expected to last about 30 days, the source said.
Commuters trying to access the deep South Rupununi, now have to use alternative routes because the creek bed cannot accommodate any vehicles, since the water level has risen due to rain.
The accident two weeks ago, that involved the hauler and bulldozer owned by contracting company V. Dalip Enterprise, happened in the process of their crossing the Moco Moco Bridge.
An inspection of the scene, immediately after by the Minister of Public Works, Mr. Robeson Benn, Regional Officials and engineers, resulted in the recommendation being made for the bridge replacement.
