Pensioner, 71, loses $1M jewellery in burglary

SEVENTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD pensioner Jaspattie Dwarka called ‘Mary’, of Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast, was robbed of $1M in jewellery on Monday night.

The woman, who lives alone, said she was not aware, until yesterday morning, that her house had been broken into by thieves and the jewels stolen.
She awoke and made the discovery about 07:00hrs and suspects, because of the footprints in the yard, that the burglary, being investigated by police, was committed by two persons who used a garden fork to open a door to the bottom storey of her two-storey concrete and wooden building.
Dwarka said the bunch of keys to the bedrooms, wardrobe and the gate were left on a table in the lower flat and the thieves used them to open her wardrobe and steal the jewellery which her parents had given her many years ago.
However, she is thanking God to be alive and reported that she also lost $30,000 worth of groceries, cosmetics and some of her clothing, along with a picture of herself that was hanging on a bedroom wall.
Dwarka, who travels overseas regularly, pointed out that all her children are abroad.
